Bengaluru: The expert inspection of the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium scheduled for March 13, 2026, is a critical final hurdle for the stadium to host the IPL 2026 season opener and subsequent matches.
The Karnataka government-appointed committee is conducting this "final" review following a tragic stampede in June 2025 that claimed 11 lives during RCB's title celebrations. Since that event, the stadium has been under a cloud of safety concerns and has not hosted major matches with fans.
Key Details of the Inspection
- The Date: Tomorrow, Friday, March 13, 2026.
- The Objective: The committee will oversee a full-scale mock demonstration of match-day arrangements. This includes assessing crowd flow, emergency exits, and newly installed safety infrastructure.
- The Deadline: The Justice D’Cunha Committee had previously set March 15 as the deadline for the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) to complete all essential "short-term" safety upgrades.
- What's at Stake: The IPL 2026 opener between Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) is scheduled for March 28 at this venue, but it remains "subject to clearance" from this committee.
Recent Safety Upgrades at Chinnaswamy
Under the leadership of new KSCA President Venkatesh Prasad, the stadium has undergone a significant overhaul to meet government mandates:
- New Entry/Exit Points: Installation of additional gates and widening of existing ones to prevent bottlenecks.
- Advanced Screening: Implementation of modern screening systems and QR code ticket scanning for faster entry.
- Segregation: Clear separation of routes for players/dignitaries and the general public.
- Transport Integration: Advanced talks with BMRCL (Metro) to allow ticket holders free or streamlined travel to reduce road congestion.
The "Raipur" Contingency
Because the clearance is not yet guaranteed, the BCCI and RCB have already designated the Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Stadium in Raipur as a secondary home. Currently, two of RCB's seven home games are scheduled for Raipur, but reports suggest the venue is on standby to take over the season opener if the March 13 inspection fails to satisfy the experts.
